In GUATEMALA, HONDURAS, MEXICO and HAITI, as well as PERU, NICARAGUA, COSTA RICA and NIGERIA, Rights Action supports community development, emergency relief and human rights projects for the poor, by the poor. EXAMPLE - HAITI: In response to 2 hurricanes to hit Haiti in 2004 (killing thousands, leaving homeless over 100,000), Rights Action established the "Haiti Emergency Relief Fund that directly funds community-based organizations in Haiti that are providing immediate relief and are re-building communities with a long-term vision of ending the vulnerability of the poor majority.
EXAMPLE - GUATEMALA: The Mayan-Achi people of Rabinal have lived in poverty and marginalization for generations. Their rates of illiteracy, poverty and disease rank among the highest in the Americas. Rights Action is funding:
- a primary school and scholarships for orphaned and poor Mayan-Achi youth;
- a micro-loan fund for widows carrying out productive projects;
- a community legal aid clinic, with a special focus on dealing with domestic violence;
- a community Mayan-Achi museum.
Ending poverty and injustice is not only a question of improving their material life, but also restoring their sense of dignity and control over the personal and community life.
